Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars or as I am going to refer to it for the rest of the review, Mario RPG, is an interesting take on the RPG genre. First of all the game is a Mario game. So obviously it is set in the Mario world. Which is where we will begin this review.

The Land
The world in this game is amazingly well thought out and executed perfectly. You have never been thrown into the world of Mario like this. This is most comparable to the world of Super Mario World. With that being said, I give you this.
Taaadaaa. World map action.

It may look large here but the game really isn't that long, thus making it an average map. Compare the map above to the one on the left. You will see some minor similarities and a lot of differences. This is because Mario RPG takes place 6 years after the events of Super Mario World and you can see there have been some major shifts. Upon Bowser's defeat, his castle was moved from inside the cave to the top of the cave. Bowser made his minions do this because he was really pissed that Mario got the princess again. But to move the castle they had to dig it out. Which led to a huge cave-in that caused all of Mario World to shift.

and if you believed anything I said about the history of Mario World, then you are ultra gullible.

You WILL, however, notice a few places in Mario RPG that will give you pure nostalgia (if you are a huge Mario fan).

The Story and Characters
The story is a bit cheesy in the game. But that is what makes the game so fun. All the dialog is full of funnies and pot shots from everything to Mario's stature to Bowser's Shell. Obviously, Nintendo and Sqauresoft (now the ever popular Square-Enix) had to make it kid friendly because it is a Mario game. Let's face it, the most violent game he will ever be in is Super Smash Bros. and he is shadowed out by all the other characters in that.
Pic Sort of related.
Anyhoo, this game revolves around Mario and company collecting Stars to save the world from udder destruction from giant living weapons invading Mario's world. Which is pretty basic for an RPG, so it doesn't get many points there and it isn't going to "move" anyone or touch their hearts. BUT the game is presented in such a fun and accessible way that it is hard not to love. Unfortunately, the game only has one ending and no areas where if you choose a different option, will change very much in the game aside from getting certain items. There are a TON of secrets and side quests though so that makes up for it.

Mallow is a cute party member.
The characters are all awesome too. One thing I am glad they kept in the story line is the fact Mario doesn't talk. EVER. To be honest, I don't think many of Miyamoto's main characters talk...I wonder why? Carrying on, all the other characters play backup rolls properly and everyone usually tells you what Mario is thinking or you get to choose what Mario is going to "say"

Gameplay
This game plays like a traditional RPG with twitch elements. What I mean by that is say you are in battle and you want to use and attack with Mario. When Mario's turn rolls around, you choose who you want to attack. Then you go in for the attack. BUT right before your attack hits, you hit the same button you have set up to the "attack" command and it will do double damage. If you do it with an item you, you get to keep the item. While getting attacked, it reduces damage. Works for Magic too. Neat huh?
Battles look like this,
Did I mention this is an amazing intro RPG for any one who is looking to get into the RPG market?

Sound
Do you like Mario Music and sounds?
If the answer is yes, the you will like this area. Otherwise you may get a bit annoyed.

Overall
Despite this being a game geared towards children, it is still a hell of a lot of fun. Lots of fun mini games, sidequest, casino games, etc. etc.

There really isn't too much reason to replay this game, however. Beside for nostalgia's sake. I managed to play through the entire game without getting a game over too. This was a huge feat for me because I have never really done that before during a first play through.

All and all though everything in this game is about as stiff as ones dong was when he discovered porn (That is rock hard or jizzed pants if you ladies were wondering. Yes, this game may be good enough to make you Orgasm.)

I give it an 8.8 out of 10

Regh out.

PS. sorry about the format, I can't get my stuff to format right at all for some reason. Anyone else having this problem or had it?

  3. The mark of truly beating this game is getting 100 super jumps in a row in battle (never known anyone to do it, in real life or online...shit's fucking HARD) and beating Culex (think that was his name). If you have the Super Suit from the 100 super jumps, he's not bad, but otherwise, he's a beast.

  6. Same deal for me, Venefican. I did find a way to make it work after doing a search online about it, but for some reason I got distracted and didn't go back to it.

It was a great game. Even if you're fighting enemy after enemy, it doesn't get boring because of how involved the battle system is, where you can time your attacks for extra damage. The story is silly... I remember Mallow's story -- pretty ridiculous, but cute.
